Yakima to Unveil Products for Fall 2020 at Outdoor + Snow Show

New gear includes the next evolution of the cargo box and a hitch-mounted e-bike rack

LAKE OSWEGO, Ore., January 27, 2020 – For more than 40 years, Yakima has provided road warriors of all stripes with best-in-class cargo solutions, freeing up space inside the car to take more people along for the adventure. In particular, the company’s rooftop cargo boxes have become a ubiquitous sight on America’s roads, hauling everything from skis and snowboards to camping gear and climbing equipment. For Fall 2020, Yakima is proud to introduce the next evolution of the cargo box: CBX.

The CBX collection includes three different boxes, including both 16- and 18-cubic-foot versions and a second 16-cubic-foot model that features an integrated solar panel for charging battery-operated gear when off-grid.

Also new for Fall 2020 is OnRamp,Yakima’s first bike rack specifically designed for e-bike consumers, and GrandTour Lo, a low-profile addition to the GrandTour collection of premium cargo boxes debuting this spring. The new products will be on display at the Outdoor + Snow Show (booth #49002-UL), January 29–31, in Denver, Colo.

“Our team has really hit it out of the park with these Fall 2020 introductions,” said Garrett Barnum, Director of Category Management at Yakima. “In true Yakima fashion, we’re excited to once again provide consumers with several incredibly innovative and feature-rich solutions for transporting the gear they need to enjoy the outdoors.”

CBX Cargo Box Collection

Modeled after current high-end automobile trends—both in terms of design and naming convention—the CBX line features modern aesthetics and an all-new microtexture exterior that, combined with a premium feature set, make it the ultimate in rooftop cargo boxes. The lid has an integrated handle that disconnects when the box is locked for an added layer of security and a streamlined look. CBX also features new mounting hardware that maximizes the available space within the box. The torque-limiting tool used to secure the box to crossbars stows away neatly inside. With both 16- and 18-cubic-foot models available, both of which offer excellent hatch clearance, there’s a model for nearly every vehicle on the road.

Yakima teamed with Sunflare in the design of CBX SOLAR, the first mass-produced, premium-level cargo box with an integrated solar panel. Sunflare, based in La Verne, Calif., is the first company to successfully mass-produce light, thin, flexible, and durable CIGS (copper indium gallium selenide) solar panels, which are 75 percent lighter and 95 percent thinner than standard c-Si (crystalline-silicon) panels. Sunflare’s CIGS panels are capable of withstanding high impact; are impervious to heat, wind, and cold; and will not crack. With Sunflare’s headquarters just 30 miles from the facility where Yakima’s cargo boxes are made in Riverside, Calif., and given the inherent environment-friendly properties of solar power, the new CBX SOLAR cargo box represents a tremendous sustainability story for 2020.

The integrated 36-watt panel on the CBX SOLAR cargo box produces a 5-volt (3-amp max.) output through two USB ports, making it a completely green way to power your campsite or tailgate/trailgate activity. Use the power of the sun to charge portable batteries and devices without having to drain your car battery or even start your vehicle. CBX SOLAR is a finalist in the Outdoor + Snow Show Innovation Awards competition, the winners of which will be announced at an awards ceremony at the Colorado Convention Center on January 30.

Cargo boxes in the CBX collection will have MSRPs of $849, $949, and $1,299for the 16, 18 and SOLAR models, respectively. The line will be available at retail locations, digital retailers, and at Yakima.com on August 15.

OnRamp E-Bike Rack

Yakima’s new hitch-mounted e-bike rack holds two bikes up to 66 pounds each and has an integrated ramp that allows for simple bike loading/unloading and conveniently stores on the rack. The rack folds up without bikes loaded and tilts down with bikes loaded for easy hatch clearance and access. All-new cradles are gentle on bikes and accommodate many types of bicycles in addition to e-bikes, including town bikes, MTB, cruisers, road bikes, and bikes with fenders. The bike trays have built-in side-to-side adjustment, and OnRamp features Yakima’s SKS (single-key system) locks to secure both the bikes and the rack itself.

OnRamp will have an MSRP of $549 and will also be available at retail locations, digital retailers, and at Yakima.com on August 15.

GrandTour Lo

For those who like to travel in style, the GrandTour Lo features a premium, sleek look without compromising functionality or capacity. It has a height of just 11.5 inches, offers 15 cubic feet of interior space, and accommodates skis up to size 210. Its low-profile stature is great for larger SUVs heading to the mountains or pulling into parking garages. It’s packed with technical upgrades and an automotive sheen that looks great on high-end vehicles. GrandTour Lo will join 16- and 18-cubic-foot GrandTour models that are set to debut this spring.

GrandTour Lo will have an MSRP of $779 and, like the other Fall 2020 introductions, will be available at retail locations, digital retailers, and at Yakima.com on August 15.
